Review
Well, have to try not to give a biased review as I was the promoter for this one. Overall the competition was good, the heaviest we have had here in Manitoba from what I can recall. Was another hot day in Altona, though not the hottest we have had. The competition started late and ran late, things that will change for next year. The crowds were large for the first half or so…then start to fade a bit. Al Block shone in most of the events, Jamin did win the Yoke/Farmers walk, and Nick held the trucks longer then anyone. I really enjoyed the comp, every event was hard, and my hands were killing me once it was over.
Prizes
Open ($600, $300, $150) 220lb ($200, $100, $50)
Truck Pull (Fehr Insurance)
Review
For the truck pull we ended up pulling a 3-ton truck over and 80 foot course. Hand over Hand. The rope use was fairly thin. The plan has been to use a 33,000 lb fire truck, but in testing prior to the comp, we determined it was too heavy. We did not have time to test the 3-ton, but figured it should be an easy pull. We were wrong. Only three competitors completed the pull. The surface had several small cracks and dips that really made it hard to pull if you did not keep the momentum up. Plus, the truck started with the front wheels in a bit of a crack. Jason really ripped up his hands in this one, and it probably impacted his performance the rest of the day. Al, Ryan, and Nick were the only ones able to complete the full pull.
Rules
Each competitor will be asked to pull, while seated, and hand over hand, the truck over an 80 foot course. This is a timed event, 90 second max time. If time runs out then the competitor will be marked on distance. The referee will ask if the competitor is ready, then signal go and time will start.
Medley (Con-pile Construction)
Review
For the medley we took the 600lb yoke 60 feet, then turned around and carried 275lb farmer’s walks back. The yoke was really nice, narrow, and easy to move with (disregarding the weight). Several of the competitors struggled with the heavy yoke. And, if you made it, your legs were pretty tired for the farmer’s walk. Four guys completed this one, with Jamin having the best time, followed by Al, and Nick, and then Brent.
Rules
The competitor will carry a 600lb yoke 60 feet then pick up two 275lb farmer walk implements and carry them back (60 feet). This is a timed event, 90 second max time. If time runs out then total distance will be counted. You are allowed unlimited drops for both the yoke and the farmers walks. All implements must be completely over the finish line. Referee will signal you when you are past. Dragging will add a 3 second penalty at the referees discretion. Referee will ask if both competitors are ready, call lift, then in 2 seconds, will signal go and time will start. Two competitors will compete at a time.
Tire Flip (Rendezvous Fitness Centre)
Review
We flipped two tires, first the 635lb tire (with rim, tall, narrow and good grip) three times, then an 800lb tire (no rim, tall, wide, good grip) three times. We had tested the 800lb tire at Fountain Tire on gravel. It was hard but not impossible. But, once this tire was on pavement, you could not get your fingers under the tread. This made it ever harder than anticipated. Only two competitors were able to make the six flips, Al with the best time, followed by Ryan. Jamin and Vern got close both making five flips.
Rules
The competitor will flip a 635lb tire (with a rim) 3 times, and then flip an 800lb tire (no rim) 3 times. Tires will start flat on the ground. This is a timed event, 90 second max time. If time runs out then # of flips will be counted. Competitor cannot be touching tire until go signal. Referee will ask if both competitors are ready, and then signal go. Time will then start. Two competitors will compete at a time. No tacky allowed.
Power Stairs (Conquest MFG-Superior Distributers)
Review
Hope everyone was impressed with the huge stairs. Steps were 18” High, five steps in total. There was talk before the event started that we had gone to light. Some people wanted the 400lb duck walk from the Ex. Well..once we got going, it was clear our weights were going to push the competitors. We really did not have a chance to test this event, but it worked out well. We carried the 270lb stack of 45lb plates up first, and then the 290lb duck walk implement with two stacks of 25lb plates, and lastly a 315lb stack of 45lb plates. Al was the only one to make all 15 steps. Two light weights got 14, Brent and Vern. This event was very tricky due to the implements themselves. The lift was high, and somewhat awkward for the 45lb plate stacks. Jamin seemed to have trouble planting his feet on the steps..but luckily did not get hurt. Brian injured his hip in this one, hopefully nothing serious, but it dropped him out of the competition. Some of us showed the “jump” to the next step technique, and Vern just flew through the first two implements.
Rules
The competitor will carry three duck walk implements (270lb, 315lb, 360lb) up five steps. Competitor must first do the 270lb, then 315lb, and then the 360lb implement. This is a timed event, 120 second max time. If time runs out then number of steps completed will be counted. Referee will ask if the competitor is ready, then signal go, and time will start.
Circle of Pain (Smith Chiropractic)
Review
The circle of pain was run one competitor at a time, instead of two, and instead of measuring distances, we just made marks where the competitor got, and initialled it. This seemed to make every competitor go a little further then the one before him. Strange how that works, for me, well, I knew I had to go past Ryan mark to get into second place, and that is just what I did. Al, went the furthest, and am sure he could have gone a lot further then he did.
Rules
Competitors will walk in a circle for distance carrying a weighted bar, 500 lb in plates, on their arms which are folded in front of them. The bar is anchored to a pivot. This event is umlimited time, for max distance. Referee will ask if both competitors are ready, then signal go. Competitors have 15 seconds to lift and go at that point. Two competitors will compete at a time.
Truck Deadlift (Junction RV)
Review
Going into the last event, Al had first wrapped up, the big race was between Brent in 2nd and Ryan in 3rd, 1/2 of a point separating them. And, to make it even more fun, we got to go head to head. I can tell you, my hands were killing me, and I was shaking, but I was not going to drop before Ryan. Once he dropped, I let go, and suddenly realized I had not picked it up as fast as him. We waited for the times, and I won by ˝ a second. Wow… Nick held the cars the longest, going over a minute. JJ and Duane (Brothers) were fun to watch, as they taunted each other, JJ beat his brother this time! Al went alone, so Curt (Promoter) went against him. Al did not bother holding on much longer then Curt. The trucks themselves were an easy lift, but trying to hold with out straps is totally different. I expect we will see more of this in MASA next year.
Rules
Two competitors will face each other and each lift a 4x4 extended cab pickup truck. Referee will ask if both competitors are ready, will signal go and the competitors have 15 seconds to lift. Time will start when a competitor lifts his truck wheels off the ground. No Straps. No resting the implements or your hands on your legs.
