It was really great to get a chance to compete in the middle of winter. Lanze put together a pretty good contest, with good events, and stiff competition. The crowd turnout was ok, but there were lots of other things going on in the Keystone center to occupy them. Al was in the lead pretty much the whole time, but below him it was anybodys contest. The under 200 lb class may have surprised some of the bigger competitors. (light weights have an asterix to the right of their name)
Prizes
Open ($500, $200, $100) 200LB ($150, $100, $50)
Farmers Walk
Review
The implements weighed 255lbs each, and we carried them down a 120 foot course, around a tire, and back again. This was the heaviest farmers walk I had seen in Manitoba, and we all did pretty well. The corner was hard, but not too bad, as you had to go around a big tire. Al and Mike really shone in this event, both with their speed and distance they went.
Rules
Start with two objects weighing 255lbs each and go until you drop one. Distance will be measured from start line to front of the back object. No lifting straps allowed.
Tire Flip
Review
This tire was hard to grip. Almost no tread, and you could not get your fingers under it either as the treads went right to the cement. It was supposed to be around 700 lbs. Tacky really seemed to help. Once again Al ripped through this event taking less than half the time of the next closest competitor.
Rules
There will be one tire approximately 700 lbs and each competitor will be asked to flip it 5 times in a one minute time limit. If time runs out then the competitor will be judged on the number of flips and the time of the flips.
Log Press
Review
The log press started at 205, then went to 225, 245, 255, 265. The log had thick handles. For some reason I really struggled at this one, maybe the tire tired me out. Darren showed everyone his strength, going to 265 and having enough left for a couple more I am sure.
Rules
This will be an elimination event for weight. Everyone makes every lift, no passing. Each competitor will be allowed 45 seconds to make a lift. There will be no bouncing off the tires, the judges will call foul. The judge will call out “good lift” when competitor locks out. The weight will start at 200 lbs then go to 230, 250, 270, 280 & up by ten. Must make first lift to score points.
Dead Lift
Review
We used the farmers walk implements for the deadlift, and it seemed much different then gym deadlifting. My max gym deadlift is around 500 lbs, and with the implements (handles at 18") I got up to 730. Darren did 870, and it was a good thing no one else did, as we were almost out of plates.
Rules
This will be an elimination event for weight. Everyone makes every lift, no passing. Each competitor will be allowed 45 seconds to make a lift. The judge will call out “good lift” when competitor locks out. The weight will start at 310 lbs then go to 410, 510, 550, & up by 40. Must make first lift to score points. No lifting straps allowed.
Truck Pull
Review
We pulled the 15,000lb ton truck over a 100' course. The rope was pretty thin and a little strechy. The event was pretty hard, and it took some endurance to finish. The lightweights did well in this event. Best time was Al with a fast 58.19 seconds.
Rules
Each competitor will be asked to pull (hand over hand) a truck over a set course. This is a timed event and the lowest time will win this event (90 second max time) if time runs out then the competitor will be marked on distance.
Stone Loading
Review
The stones, 220, 235, 290 were lifted on to platforms, 5'4" 4'10", and 3'11". I had never done round stones before, but thought I might be able to get the 290. Well…nope. It was as if it were glued to the floor. Wow. Lanze was the only one that managed all three. Some of the competitors had problems with the high height of the first platform.
Rules
Competitors will be asked to load three stones on a platform. The stones will be approximately 215 lbs, 220, 230. There will be a 60 second time limit. Fastest time wins this event. If the stones are not all loaded then it will go to the number and times of the stones loaded.
