This was round one of the Western Canada Cup. The goal was to get most of the best guys from the west and put them into one of the heaviest contests ever in western Canada. I would have to say it was a success! This was by far the hardest competition I have ever been in. Every competitor in the competition did really well with huge weight. Brad Provick did an awesome job, even though he was competing right after spending a week in St. Martin with All Strength. Darren cleave was amazing once again. And big Ed Brost was at the top of almost every event. Several relative new comers also impressed everyone. Among them Chris, Dana, and Rob. Nick and Scott, who were two of the youngest guys there at 20, did really well. Day one ended after four events with the Atlas stones. Round two is not finalized yet, but will probably be in Manitoba. Round three in Alberta.

Truck Pull
Review
This was the hardest truck pull I have ever done. In fact, most of the competitors said the same thing. Actually it was not that hard, but supper taxing. Most competitors could hardly walk when they were done this event. Was so bad we had to take a 20 minute break before heading into event two! For me, it felt really good tell about half
way, I was skipping a step each time, and felt good and fast. Until half way. Then it fell apart. Still managed to finish the event. Scott was blazing in this one. Beating second place by around 17 seconds. The ladder was 80 feet long, with rungs every 8 inches. So, 120 steps for the whole distance, or about 60 squats if you want to compare it to a squat. Harnessed to two semis one behind the other.

Rules
Truck Pull: Truck will be pulled for time over an 80ft course on a ladder with 8" spacings. Truck wt aprox 60,000lbs.
Deadlift
Review
Lifted the standard size axle (2" I think). No straps. My best DL before the comp was 505 so I was pretty happy when I did 525. Brad won with 700 and am sure he could of done more. Brost also did well. Rob did a little backwards walk with the 600 that looked a little scary!
Rules
Axle Deadlift for max wt: Attempts will start at 500lbs. Wt's 500-600 increase by 25lbs, 600-700 will increase by 20 lbs, 700 and over increase by 10lbs. There will be 5 attempts, one failure and you are out. Minimal hitching allowed, the wt must be fully locked. Competitor will have 1 min to complete the lift after the start signal from the judge.
Hercules Hold
Review
I allways love this event, and turned out to be my best one of the weekend. Managed a 4th place here, and the next two guys held on a wee bit longer then me. Dana held forever here, and would have gone longer but he was off center a bit.
Rules
Hercules Hold: This will be for max time. Wt will be around 300/hand. Not sure because of the angle of the pillars. If the competitor has a bad release, they will be allowed a restart.
Atlas Stones
Review
This was a hard event for me. 65" is about the top of my head…in practice I had gotten the 270 several times. I knew if I could get the first two, I would get a few more. But just could not get the 280 high enough. Brost flew through 4 stones in 21 seconds. Provick was the only one to get all five. Were a few tense moments when the 300 rolled off the platform and crashed onto the cement floor, luckily nothing broke!
Rules
Atlas Stones: 90sec time limit to lift 5 stones or fewer. A time will be taken for each stone. Tacky allowed. 270lbs to 65" 280lbs to 65" 300lbs to 56" 340lbs to 50" 375lbs to 50"
Axle Press
Review
I had done 255 in practice….but had used my belt to help me in the clean. Since we could not do that here, it really killed me. My clean was really hard and then had nothing left for the press. Cleave won at 315 with the least amount of lifts. Scott was impressed also making 315. He did a little dance with it at the end, walking forward off the matts, but managed to put it down on the tires.
Rules
Axle Clean and Press for max wt: Starting wt 250lbs. Wt's will increase by 15lbs until 300 and then increase by 10lbs. 5 attempts allowed, 1 failure your out, must be fully locked out and you will have 1 min to complete the lift after the judge says go. I hope to have tires on the bar so it can be dropped.
Squat
Review
It was here that I realized my parallel..was not low enough. Had done 505 on the bar, and 500 with my yoke…but could not get the 500 here. Brad took the event win again with 4 reps.
Rules
Squat for reps(600 or 500): Depth will be preset for each competitor to parallel. We will start with 600 for reps and then go with 500. Warm ups on the Squat will be allowed so everyone gets a feel for it. If you try 600 and miss, you will be able to try 500 after. Time limit is 90sec, and most reps wins. There will be no time for each rep, so if 2 people tie at 5 it doesn't matter who did them faster.
Farmers Walk
Review
330 felt pretty heavy. In training I had gone about 60 feet…but it was not to be on this day. I went about 20, and after I dropped, I had nothing left. Could not get them off the ground again. Still had grip left..but no strength. Provick went 120 feet for the win and Nick was impressive in second with 84 feet. The pick was pretty high on these.
Rules
Farmers Walk: They are stacked railroad rails with a pickup of about 17". Wt is 330/hand for 150ft with no turns. There is a 90sec time limit and there will be no limit on putdowns. Fastest time or furthest distance wins.
Super Yolk
Review
To Come.
Rules
Super yoke: 800lbs for 80ft. The judge will say ready set go. There will be only one put down allowed after you cross the start line. The competitor will have 20 seconds after time starts to fully cross the start line. If they are not able to do this in the 20 seconds they are done. Fastest time or furthest distance wins. There will be no sliding of the yoke, and if there is they will have to reset it before they continue.
Medley
Review
To Come.
Rules
Medley: Tire flip 900 for 2 flips, Duck walk 20ft then load onto 14" step(410lbs) then drag 500lbs 40ft. Time taken on each implement or distance measured. 90sec time limit
