Review Brent:
This was the third time we have had the 105kg Canadians, and was the best level of competitors of them all. We had a good spread of athletes from all across Canada for a change.
Robin’s shows ran fast, and was at a great location. Two events got dropped (tire flip and sled drag) and the crucifix hold was added. Robin probably does not have that much experience at being ref, but has learnt a lot now I am sure.
It was great to meet Jamie McEwan, someone who I have seen around a lot on the net. He did well, and supported all the other athletes in the events.
Jamie Templeman was another athlete I have talked with online but never met. He did well, especially in the atlas stones.
Paul started off slowly but gained momentum after the first two events. He could easily have placed higher.
John Crocker started off really well. He was in 2nd place after two events. But the thick handled farmers did him in. His log pressing was impressive. I think he made more attempts at the 240 then anyone, and finally got it..then went on to make 260 as well.
Jonny Angry did really well in a lot of the events. Farmers and atlas stones cost him some points. It turns out he really is not that angry of a guy.
Myself, well…what can I say…I decided I was going the night before the competition. Booked my flight and was off. I messed up in the yoke, and would have done better in the deadlift had I been bouncing, but was happy with some of the other events. Next year will be different!
Tim was awesome. Placed consistent everywhere and that paid off. Had he been able to get 260 on the log he would have been in the money.
Jordan was impressive. He was one of the guys I thought would place high, and he did. He won the static hold, and only messed up in the stones.
Dennis, was another guy I have seen on the net for years, but never met. Was good to finally do that. He started slowly, but once the first two events were done, he really took off. Most impressive was his farmers walk with the thick handles.
Lastly Darrell, who I thought would win. And win he did. 25lb PR in the log press was awesome, and I think his yoke was a PR as well. He definitely deserves to represent Canada at the worlds in 2006.
Jamie McEwan:
First of all, I’d just like to say thanks to Robin Wright for running the show—it was a great time. Secondly, I’d like to thank every competitor who came out and gave it their all, then supported me; I was more than happy to return the favour, and I was sad that I couldn’t have spent more time after the contest to hang out. It was great to meet Brent, Dennis, Jordan, Darrell, Tim, and John.
Brent, I appreciate all the support and for lending me the Elite tacky. Also, thanks for putting in the good word for the “Most Tenacious” award! You showed what a true champion is by coming out and competing with that injured ankle.
Dennis, thanks for the psyche ups and the support during the events. I need to train with someone who’ll slap me like you did. Next season I’ll make it out to Alberta and try to compete with you again. You rocked this contest considering it was your first in such a long time.
Jordan, I really appreciate the encouragement you gave me. We’ll keep in touch and I’ll try to get you posting. You really surprised me in this contest.
Darrell Crouse was in a class of his own, it seemed. He deserves the place in WSMu105kgs. Very fit, and actually went to the gym in between days for an extra session!
Tim and John were the lightest guys there, but really showed up this weekend. Both were extremely impressive and I’m glad to have met them. Tim had an insane amount of intensity, and John had the will power to nail a 240 and 260 on the log after several attempts in the sixty second time limit.
The BC boys, Jamie T, Paul, and Johnnie Angry all showed up and looked the part. It was great to see them competing in New West, and their encouragement and support went a long way. It’s the positive attitude of the BC guys that will really help them in this sport. I look forward to many years of competing with you guys.
As for my part, I had a great time, but made some major mistakes. Prizes $1200, $700, $300
Super Yoke Review Brent:
Yoke is usually my best event. And after doing 900 for 35 feet or so in Altona two weeks before BC I thought I could win it here. I was 2nd last to go, so I knew what had to be done. Trouble was the yoke did not stay on my back. I have no idea what was wrong. We were allowed one drop. I went 20 feet or so before that happened. I tried again..but still could not keep it on for 100’. Very disappointing, and cost me some spots in the overall. John did really well here, easily finishing the 100’ course. But it was Darrell with the win in 28.93 seconds. Jordan was the only other athlete to finish the course.
Jamie McEwan:
I picked this up with my hands in the wrong position. Both times, as soon as I picked it up, it started to slide down my back very quickly. Next time, gadget, next time. Last place. Rules 700 lbs

Log press Review Brent:
We did the log press with a 10” log. I ended up with a three way tie at 260 here. They said I strict pressed it. I had to do that because my range of motion in the ankle was really bad, and this is the event where I feel it most. If I try and get leg drive, my ankle ignores my brain and it messes me up. Tim was so explosive on the press, and will definitely hit the big numbers soon. John should have won something for most attempts at 240. He really struggled on that one. Jordan also got the 260 up. But Darrell stole the event with a 25lb pr. Very nice work.
Jamie McEwan:
I hit 200lbs no problems, and I was confident to hit 220 and take a good shot at 240. My left elbow didn’t get tucked in enough before the press on 220, I locked out my right arm so quickly that my left arm was stuck way behind, and I couldn’t lock it out. This was the biggest disappointment of the show, because I should be killing this weight every time I step up. Never again. Last place again. Rules Log press for max
Starting weight 200 lbs, 20 lb increments
Farmers Walk Review Brent:
The farmers were thick handled (1 7/8” I am told) and were taped. We went 100’ with a turn at 50’, and were allowed unlimited drops. Thick handles really made this harder. I almost finished the course, but ran out of time. I think I dropped them 5 times. Each time I did, i picked them up very fast..but just could not hang on. Dennis blazed through this, I think we forgot to tell them they had thick handles!! Darrel was in 2nd with a pretty good time, not sure how often he dropped them. John had a tough time getting his hands around them.
Jamie McEwan:
These things were thick… and slippery. I went almost 45’ with them, and that was that. I placed mid-pack, I think. I want some thick farmer’s handles now. Personal best? Rules 275 lbs per hand

Static Hold Review Brent:
The static hold was added kinda last minute. Definitely one of those events I hate to see at a competition. Always very hard to judge, even with experienced refs. Jordan held on for 50 seconds, narrowly beating Jonothan.
Jamie McEwan:
I set a time of just over 38 seconds and placed mid-pack again. Due to how subjective judging on this event is, I would have liked to see the tire medley, but the tires didn’t show up. I think Robin made a good choice in having a back-up event planned. Personal best, I’d say. Rules 35 lb wrenches held out to sides
Conans Wheel Review Brent:
I think the Darrell took it for almost 2.5 laps. I would have preferred heavier here, as of late I suck at anything over 1 lap. Not sure what has happened to me.
Jamie McEwan:
I went first, and had the bar slip off of my right arm midway through my walk. I have no idea how I walked at all only holding the bar with one arm. Ninth place. I think this was a personal best. Rules 650 lbs
Car deadlift Review
Brent:
The car deadlift was done from about 18”. Straps and suits allowed. Not sure what the weight was, but was way to light. Had lots of problems with officiating in this one. Reps that were not ok were counted. Worst part was the first few guys (which I was a part of) were told it was stop on the bottom. But part way through it changed to bounce and go. Frustrating. None the less Darrel easily won with 50 reps in 60 seconds.
Jamie McEwan:
I went second and beat Jamie T’s mark of 13 reps, by hitting 14. My rebound from the bottom was off, but I wouldn’t have hit what the winner did anyways… 50 reps. I’d say it was too light. Rules Reps in 60 seconds, 650 lbs at the handles
Atlas Stones Review
Brent:
We did these to the 56” platform. The first stone slipped right out of my hands, which was weird, maybe to hot for my tacky, I dunno. Switched to lapping after that instead of one motion. I got the 305 on, but I went to try the 335 and it was so dusty and dirty there was no way I could get it. Probably would not have gotten it to that height if it were clean either. Darrel completed all 5 in 38 seconds, and was the only one to do so. He then went on to try the heavyweights last stone, was 365 I believe. He almost got it too. Very impressive.
Jamie McEwan:
I nailed the first two, picked up the third, almost got it on the ledge, then I almost blacked out and fell on the ground. I’m glad the stone didn’t hit me. This was a disappointment, since I almost had that stone on. I need some stones. Might be a personal best considering I never use stones. Rules Five stones 240, 260, 280, 305, 335
